Buffalo (or bison} faced endangerment primarily due to overhunting and habitat loss during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Settlers and commercial hunters decimated vast herds for their hides, meat, and to deprive Native Americans of their primary resource. Habitat destruction and fragmentation due to agricultural expansion further threatened their populations. By the late 1800s, their numbers plummeted from tens of millions to a few hundred individuals. Conservation efforts and breeding programs have helped recover their populations, but they remain vulnerable to habitat loss, disease, and genetic issues. Protecting their habitats and managing their populations are critical for their survival.
