Manatees, also known as sea cows, are considered threatened rather than endangered. Three species exist: the West Indian manatee, the Amazonian manatee, and the West African manatee. Threats to manatees include habitat loss, pollution, boat strikes, and accidental entanglement in fishing gear. Conservation efforts, such as habitat protection, speed zone regulations for boats, and rescue and rehabilitation programs, help mitigate these threats. However, continued monitoring and conservation actions are necessary to ensure the long-term survival of manatee populations.
