Rhinos are endangered because of two main reasons: poaching and habitat loss. Poaching is the illegal killing of rhinos for their horns, which are in high demand in some Asian countries for traditional medicine and status symbols. Habitat loss is the destruction or fragmentation of rhino habitats due to human activities such as agriculture, logging, and development. According to the IUCN Red List, there are five species of rhinos, and three of them are critically endangered: the black rhino, the Javan rhino, and the Sumatran rhino. The white rhino is near threatened, and the greater one-horned rhino is vulnerable. The population of each species varies, but the most endangered ones have less than 100 individuals left in the wild. If you want to learn more about rhinos and how to help them, you can check out these websites: Helping Rhinos, World Wildlife Fund, and International Fund for Animal Welfare.
